3. Tahlil (saying Laa ilaaha Illa Llaah)

- By frequently pronouncing Tahlil: "La ilaha illa Allah" (There is no diety worthy of true worship except Allaah) on this day, due to the Hadeeth of Ali bin Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه) who said that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: "The best of what I and the Prophets before me said on the evening of Arafah is: ' "La ilaha illa Allah" (There is no diety worthy of true worship except Allaah, Alone, without partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and praise, and He is over all things capable.'" At-Tabarani transmitted it in "Ad-Dua" (874), the chapter of: Supplication in Arafat.

And similarly (875) from Ibnu Umar (رضي الله عنهما).

علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه قال: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ: «أفضل مَا قُلْتُ أَنَا وَالنَّبِيُّونَ عشية عرفة: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ».
أخرجه الطبراني في «الدعاء» (874)، باب: الدعاء بعرفات.
وبنحوه (875) عن ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما.


Shaykh Al-Albani, رحمه الله, said in As-Silsilah As-Sahihah (1503):

In summary: The Hadith is authentic due to the collection of these corroborating narrations, and Allaah knows best." End quote.

Shaykh Al-Islaam Ibnu Taymiyyah رحمه الله, said in Majmoo' al-Fatawa (24/234): In this Hadith, the best of supplication and the best of praise are combined; for remembrance (Dhikru) is of two types: supplication and praise. End quote.

Imam An-Nawawi, رحمه الله, said in Al-Adhkar: It is recommended to increase this remembrance (Dhikr) and supplication, and to exert oneself in that; for this day is the best day of the year for supplication, and it is the most important part of Hajj and its essence. Therefore, a person should exert his utmost effort in remembrance, supplication, and Recitation of the Qur'aan. And he should be extremely careful not to fall short in any of that; for this day cannot be made up for, unlike others. End quote.
